Buyer questions this week: permit, lien, license and trade show data (week of Oct 26, 2026)

TL;DR: Each week we answer real questions buyers asked in public about public-records lead data. This week: which permit data tools work best, what Dodge and ConstructConnect are for, how duplicates and owner names are handled, whether you can get a trade show attendee list, and where code-violation data fits. Short answer: pick by use. Bidding big commercial projects is a Dodge or ConstructConnect job. Finding which contractor businesses are new or busy in one metro each week is what our $150 a month file does.

How this page works: every Monday we pick questions buyers asked in public (forums, threads, and emails to us once people write in) and answer them with our own published facts and prices. No question is made up; each one links to where it was asked. Asked something yourself? Email hello@citysignalsdata.com and we may answer it here without your name.

What permit data tools work best for lead generation?

Asked in r/LeadGeneration, August 2026 (thread).

It depends on who you sell to. If you bid on large commercial projects, project-tracking services like Dodge or ConstructConnect are built for that; one reply in that thread says teams sync them to a CRM and send reps to job sites. If you sell to contractors (insurance, bonds, supplies, equipment, software), you want to know which contractor businesses are new to a city or suddenly busy. That is our weekly file: Austin, Chicago, Cincinnati, New Orleans and Mesa, with new and busy contractor flags, expiring home permits and a source link on every row. It costs $150 a month or $490 a year per metro, or $0.004 per permit row if you run the tool yourself on Apify. If you only need one city and like to tinker, the free prompt on our build-your-own page gets you started.

Dodge or ConstructConnect, and what do they cost per month?

Asked in r/ConstructionTech (thread).

We don't sell either one and haven't priced them, so ask both for a quote. They track commercial construction projects for bidding (the person asking wanted curtain-wall jobs for a manufacturer). We do something narrower: weekly permits by city with the contractor business on each, so you can see who is working where. Our price comparison against Shovels, Construction Monitor and PingPermit, with each vendor's own published prices, is on our comparison page.

How do you handle duplicates across addresses and owner names?

Asked as a reply in r/SideProject, May 2026 (thread).

We don't carry owner names at all: no homeowner names, phones or emails. Each row is one permit with the city's own permit number, so you can match it back to the record. Contractor names are cleaned so spelling variants of one business match (for example "ABC Roofing LLC" and "ABC ROOFING, L.L.C."). Typos and trade names can still split one business in two, and we say so on the home page.

Can I get a trade show attendee list so I can book meetings in advance?

Asked in r/tradeshows (thread).

Not from us, and be careful with anyone selling one. Attendee lists are private to the show organizer. What is public is the exhibitor list the show posts for visitors. Our exhibitor tool pulls that list, scores first-time exhibitors high, medium or low, and flags exhibitors who came last year but not this year, with booth and website. If you sell booths, graphics or giveaways, first-time exhibitors are the ones still shopping. Cost: $0.003 per exhibitor row, plus $0.20 per year-over-year compare.

Are code violations a good distressed-property lead source, and do you have them?

Raised in r/WholesaleRealestate, October 26, 2026 (post).

We don't sell a code-violation lead list. Our permit file includes a count of code cases in the last 5 years for each property in Austin, Chicago and Cincinnati, as property context next to the permit. We don't include owner names or skip tracing, and the data is not for credit, insurance, hiring or renting decisions. For distress signals tied to companies, not homeowners, our Arizona feed lists the mechanics liens and lis pendens recorded in Maricopa County each week, at $0.04 per record.
